- You must connect pins 3 and 7 (DB-25 version) or 2 and 5 (DE-9
- version) to monitor data. The cross connections from DTE: 22-20 and
- DCE: 22-4 (DB-25 versions) or DTE: 9-4 and DCE: 9-7 (DE-9 versions)
- are optional but recommended, as they support automatic device
- detection. Connect the shells labeled DTE and DCE to the MONITORING
- computer. The horizontal cable at the bottom of the diagram connects
- the two devices under test and should be a normal RS-232 cable.
- Remember, if you are connecting two DTE devices with the RS-232
- cable, you must include a null modem converter or swap pins 2 and 3
- at one end of the cable.

- Connect the two devices under test with this standard
- RS-232 cable. The monitoring tap connectors hook to
- a separate PC with two serial ports. Monitoring is
- passive - we do not use pass-through - so that timing
- of the transmissions is not affected in any way.

- Connections support data only; signal information is not included.
